The neighborhood for makers & seekers.

MISSION CREEK NEIGHBORHOOD

Numerous San Francisco Neighborhoods have something that they are known for, landmarks or cultural hubs that make them recognizable. Some neighborhoods, however, are tucked between zones, leaving you wondering where exactly you are. Mission Creek is one of them. Sandwiched between the Mission District and Potrero Hill is a small cluster of blocks, formerly known as North East Mission, jam-packed with artists, makers, and entrepreneurs. Our task was to unite the eclectic neighborhood and reintroduce it to the community under its new name, Mission Creek.

As an area that needed to be clearly defined by visitors, one of the goals for this work was to build a unique, memorable identity that strongly reinforced the neighborhood name change. Luckily, Mission Creek had many more visual cues than North East Mission, so we sketched logos. Knowing that a creek runs below the neighborhood, we wanted to visually represent that idea without being too obvious, so we manipulated a typeface to reveal the creek in the negative space.

Crafting a distinct identity beyond “The Mission.”

We enlarged the word "creek" to create a justified block that emphasized that portion of the name, which was important to reinforce its difference from "The Mission." The typeface we selected as a base was a decorative serif with teardrop shapes throughout the forms, making a great starting point for a flowy logotype. We then manipulated each letter more to create consistency and flowy-ness, making a truly customized mark. The end result is a strong yet sophisticated logo that stands on its own and gives you a visual story of what the place is all about.

Spotlighting the eclectic neighborhood experiences through lamppost banners.

To introduce the new brand, we designed six unique lamppost banners that decorated the neighborhood's perimeter. The idea behind the creative was to feature the amazing experiences to be had. By focusing on hands, we allowed there to be some mystery to the shot and gave people the opportunity for them to envision themselves at that moment. The hands-stringing pasta dough could be someone taking a class, a nod to the amazing restaurants in the area, or a reference to the shop that produces pasta machines. The dog could be a recent rescue from one of the various shelters or a client at a grooming salon.

Touring the Mission Creek neighborhood.

We took a 3-hour walking tour of the Mission Creek neighborhood of San Francisco. Bordering The Mission District and Potrero Hill, this small collection of blocks is jam-packed with creativity, production, and small businesses. After seeing the place branding we did for Ingleside, the Merchants Association for Mission Creek reached out to us to develop an identity for this community and help bring awareness to all that it's got going on. We're so excited to be creating another neighborhood brand in San Francisco and can't wait to dive into more research and design explorations.
