MAGNIFY COMMUNITY

Magnify inspires Silicon Valley philanthropists to support the local nonprofits right where they live. Why? Because income disparity is at an all-time high and only getting worse, with 1 in 3 people not being able to meet their most basic needs. With 121,000 millionaires and billionaires in San Mateo and Santa Clara County, there’s no excuse, and Magnify is out to do something about it. They believe that if you live here, you should give here, and their campaign will make this a new norm. Backed by the Packard Foundation and as a response to The Giving Code, they’ve launched the Magnify Pledge, which is raising $100M in additional investment for local nonprofits over the next 3 years.

Creating an evocative name.

We worked with the two founders of Magnify to develop their brand story and communications strategy. Initially, they were using the working title of Give Local Silicon Valley but we knew we needed a name that evoked energy and also didn’t sound like a nonprofit. As an organization that’s constantly pivoting as they test and learn new strategies, they have more of a startup mentality. The name Magnify worked on many levels because it spoke not only to scaling investment but also to how they’re magnifying the often hidden issues happening in people’s own backyard.

‘Powering Silicon Valley Philanthropy’ as their descriptor summed up their purpose and allowed us to develop a more evocative name. Their name also lent itself to a memorable, idea-led logo with an ascending M which doubled as an icon. Armed with their new brand and communication tools, they’re able to convince high-net-worth individuals and family foundations to join their pledge. Shortly after their brand launch, they received $118M in pledges, surpassing their goal in the first year.
